Trouble? Love? Two contrasting words that are often inextricably linked. Lovely trouble? Troublesome love? These things happen.
We're here to offer you some music exploring the many ways trouble and love can intersect. Some jazz, some blues, some country, some pop. Some acoustic, some electric. Some happy, some sad. Some thoughtful, some energetic.
Whether you're falling in love, feeling troubled - or both - or neither - we hope you'll come and share an experience with us.
Janice Young & Mark Johnston
On Hiatus
Trouble & Love is on hiatus as of 2018. If you are on Mark's email list, we'll be sure to let you know if we can arrange some occasional performances. Thanks for your support.
In the meantime, Mark is doing occasional gigs in the Lyons/Longmont./Boulder area and usually announces those on Facebook.
JANICE YOUNG
Janice was born into a musical family - she sang and played guitar and keyboards in her parents' band. Her father was a song writer and her mother was an accomplished luthier - Janice still has one of the guitars she built.
She lived in Nashville for eight years, during which time she recorded a CD entitled "Remember Me" [if you're lucky, you can still get one at a Trouble and Love gig], and performed with many well-known bluegrass and country artists, including Chris Eldridge, Scott Vestal, Chris Pandolfi, Andy Hall, Jesse Cobb, Ronnie Bowman, Garnet Imes Bowman, Kim Fox, Jamie Johnson, Terry Eldridge, Jeremy Garrett, and Alan Bartram.
Janice moved to Lyons in 2012 and immersed herself in Lyons' vibrant musical community.
"I like songs that I feel a personal connection with - singing and playing music is a way for me to share my passion and love of life with other artists and with the audience."
MARK JOHNSTON
Mark took violin and later piano lessons as a kid, and remembers falling asleep to the music of Bach, Handel, Mozart and other classical greats as his father studied for his PhD nearby while listening to the local FM radio station.
He learned to play guitar in the back of a Ford station wagon on a cross-country trip with his parents and sisters in 1969. Everyone survived the 3-month ordeal.
Mark played lead guitar in various bands in Tucson, Arizona before living and working 10 years in Japan. He returned to the US in 2011 and ended up in Lyons.
He has written and recorded original compositions that range from orchestral to jazz to bluegrass, available through digital distribution channels like CDBabyand iTunes.
"I really enjoy using the broad palette of traditional orchestral instrument sounds when I write. I also get a kick out of jamming on bluegrass standards with some of the many outstanding musicians in this area or rocking out at a local bar."
